History of Karums

The history of Rīgas Piensaimnieks, the producer of Karums, is one of the stages of milk history, which has left its mark in the development of the Latvian dairy industry. Rīgas Piensaimnieks originates from Rīgas Piena centrāle founded in 1928 – a time, when Latvia was experiencing a milk consumption boom. Piena centrāle was located at Valmieras iela 2, where Rīgas Piensaimnieks now is. At that very place in 1993 the dairy producer cooperative enterprise Rīgas Piensaimnieks was founded. The enterprise started its work from scratch and on half-ruined premises. At first it produced curd snacks, later – also curd pancakes and other dairy products.

The year 1949 was remarkable in the history of milk with the appearance of the curd snack Mazulis, which had been handmade up until the 70s. Another historical fact is the introduction of the first mechanical curd snack production line, because it was one of the first food production machines created in Latvia, a patent of that time.

1994 was a landmark year because it was the birth year of the most favourite curd snack Karums. It was also the starting year for yoghurts, when Rīgas Piensaimnieks began distributing yoghurts produced in Finland. It turned out to be a strong stimulus to begin yoghurt production of our own. And so, the yoghurts Zilonitis and Fabio were created. But this is a different story…

Karums has always been popular among both the people and food industry experts. In 2005, the curd snack Karums set a record: it won all three top prizes at the Riga Food exhibition. Nothing like that had happened in the entire existence of the exhibition. For more than last 10 years the curd snack Karums has been exported to many countries, thus serving as our Ambassador of Taste in the wide world.

The development of the Karums brand is going on continuously: in 2009 Rīgas Piensaimnieks created a completely new line of a whole spectrum of dairy products and now Karums is not only the generally-liked curd snack, but also milk, sour cream, yoghurt and other dairy products.
